Seven Points to Perfect Printing

I hate struggling with output. It is hard enough in this economy just keeping ourselves above water. Often we are working in more streamlined environments and wearing many hats in order to stay profitable. The last thing we need to do is struggle with our sign making equipment to make a decent sign or banner. Wouldn’t it be great to get consistent, predictable and high quality output from our large format printers each and every time we hit the print button? Well, the following points are designed to help you achieve and maintain a job quality that will make you the envy of your competitors. These points are primarily designed for use with Roland printers, but can be used for many different printers.

Point 1: Wipers

How many remember what the wipers are?  Wipers are the single greatest asset you have for clean print heads.  Too often we hear complaints of print head “failures” or print quality issues, only to find that the wipers on the printer have never been changed.  Cleaning your print heads with a  wiper that is covered in dried ink, dog hair, and carpet fibers is like cleaning the windshield of your car with a greasy squeegee. Change your wipers early and often.

Point 2: Cleaning Solution

Get yourself a bottle of the appropriate cleaning solution for whatever ink you are using in your printer. Once a week, inspect your print heads and clean them with a foam swab soaked in cleaning solution. You can see ink buildup disappear and your heads return to pristine condition. Please remember never to use a swab to rub the bottoms of your print heads, only the sides where the ink has built up. Let the wipers clean the surface of the head (see above).

Point 3: Scheduled Maintenance

Regular inspection and cleaning of your printer will ensure consistent top notch print quality.  Clean the heads (see above), wipers, and captops (the small assembly that supports the head when it is not active). Wipe any excess ink off the platen and make sure there is nothing impeding the path of the media. I recommend that Roland printers be maintained once a week. So spend 10 minutes a week cleaning your printer.

Point 4: Calibrate

Each media you use on your printer has unique properties. For example, a 2mil cast vinyl has a different thickness than a 15oz scrim banner material.  The distance from the surface of the head to the surface of the media is different as is the way each media feeds through the printer. So it is critical that you recalibrate your printer for each type of media you use. The two basic calibrations are feed calibration (Calibration on Roland models) and BiDirectional Calibration.  Feed calibration adjusts the distance the media travels through the printer after each print pass and Bidirectional calibration ensures that the print heads are placing dots in the exact same spot in both travel directions of the head carriage.

Point 5: Presets

A little known feature on Roland printers is the ability to set default characteristics for each media you use in the form of Presets.  So for each media you use, you can calibrate your printer for that media’s specific characteristics, then save those calibration settings as a Preset. Then the next time you switch to that media, you need only load that Preset and the printer will adjust its calibration settings to that media. Newer Roland printers will even allow you to name the Presets for easy identification (Banner, Cast, Clear, etc). This can be a great time saver and allows less experienced users to operate the printer without having to rerun calibrations.

Point 6: Ink

Use OEM inks! I know that in this tough economy the temptation is strong to save money wherever possible. Ink is not the place to economize! Regardless of what the manufacturers tell you, 3rd party inks will change the color output of your prints, which will force you to find or create new profiles. Issues like density, dry times and potential damage to sensitive components of your printer (print heads cost as much as $2,500 to replace) will ultimately affect your ability to create consistent prints and may end up being much more expensive than the savings you realize by purchasing these inks over the manufacturer brand inks.

Point 7: Dealer

Develop a strong relationship with your dealer. If you don’t have a dealer or know who your dealer is, you can find them through Dealer Locater functions on manufacturer’s web sites like www.rolanddga.com. Building a good relationship with your dealer will provide you with a valuable resource for sourcing out new media, answering technical questions about your software/hardware, and repairing your printer should that become necessary.

  1. hi there we having a problem with calibration we got roland versacamm sp-540v the problem i am having ryt now its. the media its self its not moving out of the place but the machine its not printing straight on the media and i have tried to set the calibration but still its not coming straight.. so i dont know hot to get the print nice and crisp pls if u can help me out wid my solution?? thanx

  2. I wish I had read this 6 months ago. I purchased a 3rd party ink to save money and the colors were okay, BUT the dry time was RIDICULOUS I had to spend $500 to repair my print heads because the 20/20 ink dried up my print heads after being out of town for a week. I have left my roland ink in there for months and after a few cleaning cycles it was good as new! Beware other owners, take it from my experience cheaper ink…NOT worth it.

    1. Hi Lauren,
Thank you for reading our tips and tricks blog. Can you be more specific regarding what you mean by “colours are coming out spotty”? Then I can get one of our product experts to pass along some advice.

      Dede

    1. Hi Lauren,
There could be many variables contributing to this problem. Here are a few suggestions:

      1) Make sure the media is profiled correctly
      2) If the printer head height is adjustable, please adjust it according to your media.
      3) If printing bi-directional, make sure a ‘detailed’ bi-direction calibration is performed on the media.
      4) Check the printer’s nozzle – make sure all nozzles are firing.

For additional assistance, please call our Tech. Support, they will glad to assist you with your issue. 800-542-2307

  3. Hi,

I am having trouble with color matching. I just can’t seem to match PMS Cool Gray 10 for the life of me, it comes out reddish or brownish. And another customer complained that their rendering is has too much magenta in the grays. There seems to be a connection- any thoughts?

    Thanks, Louise

    1. Hi Louise,
You’re not alone! In general, ‘PMS Gray’ is difficult to match with any CMYK printer. We strongly recommend to profile the media that you are using correctly (including balancing the neutral gray with CMYK). This will eliminate the color ‘tints’ in the grays.

  4. Hi

I own an SP540i which is relatively new. a few months ago, the black & cyan started printing very grainy even after several cleanings. Any colors which include either the black or cyan also comes out grainy and the edges of letters, graphics etc are not shape at all. The print test shows a number of gaps in the black but does not show that many in the cyan. The yellow and magenta are fine.

A get very disappointing print jobs, please advise.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Anthony,
What you’re experiencing is an ink delivery/head firing problem on the printer. It’s recommended to perform the typical cleaning routine on the printer. We’ve published a guide that will help you with this process. Go here to view the guide: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_TestPrint_Rev_1.pdf

In the event the problem persists, it’s recommended to have your dealer inspect your printer and make any necessary repairs. You can find a dealer by using our dealer locator here: http://www.rolanddga.com/dealers/

      Thanks!

  5. I Own a Roland Metaza MPX 60. Sometimes Printer will print then Won’t Print . Acts like it is printing but no image. Can you please help me?

do not know what to do so I can start using my printer.

    Thanks!!

  6. I have a 300 VP. The cyan has stopped printing. The printer has been cleaned on a regular basis. The tube is not plugged. All other colors are fine. In cdr I even made a cyan circle. The color is totally gone. By the way all of the ink cart. are new as well as the caps.

  7. hey, Dede

i have a 540 of which lately it started printing with two constant lines in any colored image, and after the image starts getting off the media. thanks

    1. Hi Eid. For issues like these, its best to call your dealer directly or contact our tech support department: 800-542-2307. I asked our Tech Support about your issues and they said it sounds like you have a dirty or damaged linear encoder. To fix it, call your dealer or the tech support department.

      Dede

  8. Hello Eid:

Dede is correct that you should contact your dealer technician. Another likely cause for this issue is a damaged or loose cable to one of the print heads – particularly if the lines you mention are wide bands of a particular color. Working with cables can be a bit tricky and incorrect handling of them could cause more serious damage to the printer. The good news is, if this is the case (bad cable), it is a relatively inexpensive fix.

    Cheers,

    Scott

    1. Hi Sid,
The SP-540i printer uses the Roland VersaWorks RIP software. The embedded “glossy vinyl” profile is already optimized with a combination of settings to produce the best print quality. Simply select the profile that matches your material, and you’ll be fine. If you need to discuss this topic further, please call into Roland America technical support at 800-542-2307.

  9. I’m fairly new to the printing industry & recently acquired a Roland XC-540. I’m having problems with the print/cut feature where most of the time the cuts are way off. I print lots of small labels with logos/text that require to be centered but most of the time they come out way to the left. Is there something I can do to fix this.

    1. Hello Jake,

Roland technical support has published a print and cut calibration guide that addresses your issue specifically. You can view that document online here: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_PrintCut.pdf

Thanks for you being part of the Roland family

  10. The media came off the rollers in the back of my sp54ov jamed up and the error message said to shut thi machine down. I did this, fixed the jam, turned the power sourse back on but the machine started to go through the processing mode on the readout then the 4 ink indicators started going off and on and it started beeping. What is this and how do I remedy the situation?

    1. Hi Don,
I saw that Scott sent you a detailed email today in response to your comment. If you’re still having trouble, please call our Technical Support line at 800-542-2307 >> Press Option 1 and they can provide further assistance or direct you to a technician who can look at the printer.

  11. I work in the world of PMS colors. I have a VersaCamm 300 spi. I had no problem matching colors with my PMS color chart. But I started to have problems lately with the colors not matching. Any ideas?

    Thans

    1. Hi David,
Our technical support department recommends that you try printing a test print from the printer to assure that all nozzles are firing. Nozzles not firing correctly will cause colors not to print in the correct color. You can find instructions on doing a test print in this Printer Maintenance video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bej_mmHeDgQ&feature=youtu.be&hd=1. Another video that might be helpful is the Principles of Color management http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiIJGil6gz8&feature=youtu.be&hd=1.

If you continue to experience color management issues, please call into Roland technical support at 800-542-2307 to speak with a technician, or email tech support by completing our online form here.

Thanks for you being part of the Roland family.

  12. Hi,

I have Roland soljet pro 2 SC-540 the problem is when I printing there is unnecessary lines in my print its like a 4 lines in one area. I think there is a problem with my heads, what do you think should I to this.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Jeremy,
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. It may not be an issue with your print head. We recommend contacting either our Tech Support Dept. (1-800-542-2307 Ext. 1) or your local dealer to go over some tests to determine cause of the issue. Agents standing by.

  13. As of late when I print anything large (4×8 or larger, once the print is done, the final product us almost .25 shorter than intended. Printed a 2×6 banner this afternoon and it was also .25 short. I have checked all of the feed calibrations and other settings. This is something that has started happening on my VP-540 here lately. Cleaned the rollers and everything. Going to try another 2’x8′ in the morning to see if it still prints short. Checked the size in Flexi and VersaWorks and is set for 8′ exactly. Thanks for any insite you might have..Bash

    1. Hello Mike,
Based on the information provided, we suspect the software feed calibration settings are overriding the hardware calibration values on the machine. In VersaWorks, double-click on the job to open “Job Settings”, select “Printer Controls”, and ensure the Feed Calibration Controls are set to “Use Printer Settings”. If the problem persists, please contact Roland technical support directly. Call 800-542-2307, or submit an email request here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/.

      Thanks,

  14. Hi

I have a Roland SP540V. I have had problems in the past with a magenta overspray. I have had the print heads replaced this year. The problem has returned and I am being told I have to replace the head AGAIN! Is there anything I can do? I have also done a test print and it shows I have missing nozzles in the black. I do not want to tell the owner we need new print heads.

    HELP!

    Thanks,

    Sherry

    1. Hello Sherry,
Overspray can be caused by a few things. Static can be causing this issue and you can follow this document to troubleshoot for static http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Static%20Suppression%20for%20Roland%20Printers.pdf

Also, a dirty encoder can be a cause of overspray. Clean the linear encoder on your printer to see if it solves the problem.

Other than those two suggestions unfortunately the most comon cause of overspray is a bad print head. If the dealer has been on site and had inspected the printer, I would go with what they have diagnosed. If you’d like more feedback from us, the best way to get it is to call Roland technical support directly 800-542-2307.

      Thanks,

  15. hi i am just wondering how you adjust you head height on a roland XC-540? i have media that is aluminium backed and is approx 2mm thick and dont wont to damage the head….thank-you Mark….

    1. Hi Mark,
To adjust the head height there is a lever on the left hand side of the head carriage. Raise the lever for the high head height setting and lower the lever for low head height. As a reminder the suitable thickness of media that can be ran by our XC-540 is 1.0 MM anything thicker may cause head strikes. Hope that helps.

  16. is there any videos on how to use syringe to draw ink form the caps on a roland vp540 to see if clogged.

also is their any videos on how to change the caps

    on a roland vp-540

my vp-540 will not print the magenta/yellow. I have cleaned many times. Not showing on my test print

    1. Hello Vee,
Replacing cap tops and syringing ink are not considered a user level repair/maintenance for the printer. Therefore, documentation or video demonstrations do not exist. It’s strongly recommended to call your dealer to arrange a service visit. If you don’t have a dealer that you normally work with, you can find one using our dealer locator here: http://www.rolanddga.com/dealers/.

  17. I have a SP540v, the Black is giving an over-spray

effect in the print with a burred edge (horizontally only). When I print 100% black I now get a charcoal gray. When I calibrate the heads all was good except the BI-DIRECTION ADJUSTMENT test pattern. the black/cyan was almost off the scale(in the high 30’s). The head was installed about a year ago with these settings being in the low single digits. I totally re-calibrated the heads, cleaned the encoder strip, new dampers with caps, environmental match, cleaned all of the sensors, checked grounding and threatened it with the scrap yard with the same results.

  18. I have a roland AJ1000 and I have calibration problem. When I print with Bidirectionnal Ther are lines on the pictures. When I print with unidirectionnal it’s better but the print is not very good.

    Thank you.

    1. Hello Habib,

  19. The very very best choice we ever made was installing our precious 540i a magnificent machine we have not experienced any problems at all in the two years it has made us money and a lot of very happy military clients i know problems may arise but after owning several totally inferior printers what a pleasure to own the very best roses to Roland

  20. Hi i have a color changing problem. I printed a black and red image just fine the first time then the second one had changed the red to orange and the black to dark green a quarter of the way through the print job. i tried to peprint but still was coming out orange and green any ideas what would cause this behavior

    1. Hi Kevin,
Based on the description provided, the problem is likely an ink delivery issue with the printer. You can restore normal ink flow by performing the typical cleanings on the printer (e.g. medium cleaning, manual cleaning, powerful cleaning). However, if the problem persists, it’s highly possible that the printer is in need of service maintenance. Please call your dealer to arrange an evaluation visit. If you don’t have a dealer that you normally work with, you can find one using our locator utility here: http://www.rolanddga.com/dealers/.

  21. Dear Sir

We are a printing company in Cyprus and I would like to explain our problem.

The machine with the problem is a Roland 500.

The second tower has a problem with the leading edge clam. it seems that it is loose.

Even though it opens and closes, it does not stay closed therefore we can operate the machine.

We have the inks in the cylinders and we need to know what can we do so we can at least clean the inks.

Can you let us know what needs to be done and if you can service us urgently.

    1. Hi Andreas,

It sounds like perhaps you have a MAN Roland press and not a Roland DG wide-format inkjet. If that’s the case, then you’ll need to contact MAN Roland (they are a completely different company). http://www.manroland.com/

If indeed it is a Roland DG wide-format inkjet, then we recommend you contact your local distributor:

  22. (We use the SP540i and Versaworks RIP)

I have been printing out small decals, say on average 4” square. We have been using the Middle quality “Standard” print setting, not high-speed or high-quality. I notice a lot of graininess in those decals, and when they are a smaller size like that – it plays more of a role than a bigger or less detailed image.

I have a decal before me that was done in all vector in Flexi. Inside the letters, there is a solid color (no fill/effects). When I look at what has printed, you can see a variety of light and dark specs – almost like if you took the image into Photoshop and added Grain or Noise.

Given there has been no reduction in quality coming vector straight from Flexi, my curiosity is causing me to wonder if there is something in the RIP settings (if there ARE settings) that might cause noise to occur in the print. Or, is it simply the way of the world with the solvent ink printer and the vinyl materials we use? Is that standard? Coming from a background of photo and inkjet printers, I know that color would be solid and smooth.

    Thank you for your time!

    1. Hi JT,
We can definitely help you, but it’d be best to talk it through with you on the phone. Our Tech Support Department would like to as you a few follow-up questions in order to diagnose the issue correctly. Please call a Tech Support Rep at 800-542-2307.

  23. I am printning 6 panels for a pop-up wall. The panels are 80×230 cm. They come out in different lenght, up to 8mm from the shortest to the longest. As there are graphics that shall fit together it is a huge problem.

I printet 6 panels from a new roll, and they came out each in different length, and some of them were skew.

Then i tried to print without using the take-up system, to see if that made a difference

I printet from an nearly empty roll and 2 came out fine (same lenght), then i changed to a new roll and the next 2 panels came out 8mm shorter

I am using Sihl 3608 durasol

Printer is XJ 640 Pro III with dryer unit

    How to solve that

    1. Hi Michael,
Based on the description, the problem is likely a feed calibration misalignment. For troubleshooting purposes, do not use the take-up and give the material slack by spooling it off of the roll (do not allow the feed motor to tug directly off the roll). After positioning the material this way, perform the feed calibration on the printer and try the prints again. We suspect that will resolve the issue, but if not, please contact Roland Technical Support to discuss this further. Call 800-542-2307 or email us by completing our online form here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/

  24. Hi,

I have a Roland SP-540V that doesn’t like to finish

cutting sometimes. The cutting simply stops and the screen stays in the “now processing” mode, and I haven’t been able to get it to continue without canceling the whole job and starting again. Any ideas how to solve this?

    thanks

    1. Hello Bobby,
Based on the description provided, the issue is a network misconfiguration and it’s recommended to double check the setup by following our troubleshooting video here: http://www.youtube.com/v/bp_sy782z2k&hd=1&autoplay=1. We suspect that will resolve matter, but if not, please contact Roland Technical Support to discuss this further. 25. I am having issues when it comes to print/cuts on our SP 540V as well, but ours will print and cut very nice, but then the media begins to curl. This is something new that’s started and I’ve always just printed and cut right away. The media manufacturer says I must wait at least 4 hours between printing and cutting. Is that true?

    1. Hello Cody,
Since we don’t know exactly what media you’re using, it’s difficult to comment specifically, however, we can give you some general rules about vinyl media. Some calendared media will shrink after cutting. If you’re using a calendared media that shrinks AND does not have a strong adhesive (ie. a static cling or a removable adhesive) then curling may also occur because the adhesive is not strong enough to keep it affixed to the liner. In order to avoid the shrinkage and curling, you can try cast vinyl instead which doesn’t have the same tendency to shrink or you can try another type of calendared media since there are some that don’t shrink as much. For example, one of our product managers here has used our Glossy Calendared vinyl (ESM-GCVP) and didn’t experience shrinkage or curling. These factors are completely media dependent and the media manufacturer would have the best recommendations. If you’d like to discuss this further, Roland support is available at 800-542-2307.

  26. Hey is there anyway to use my roland xc 540 to cut a glass etch roll e.g i wont to turn my 1220mm roll into two rolls, One 1000mm and one 220mm? It doesnt matter if takes time to cut but can it be done??

    1. Interesting idea, but we do not think it will work for a number of reasons that are a bit too complex for this type of communication. If you’re interested, we’re available to discuss this further. Roland support is available at 800-542-2307.

  27. Hello,

I bought my second Roland machine about a week ago. I bought it through our dealer in Trinidad (all graphics supplies). The machine is a roland vs 540. However the print quality is bad to say the least. The dealer has been very helpful in sending technicians over to check it out (2 visits in less than 9 days of having this machine). The problem is the print is very grainy looking and not at all smooth or as solid as my roland sp 540 which is 2 years old. The technicians updated the firmware and checked the profiles and still the same poor quality prints. I’m dissapointed as I paid for this machine in full and in cash and believe in roland and only want roland printers. My customers are complaining and I have actually stopped trying to print on my week old machine. I wish I just bought another sp 540 machine instead but I understand those are no longer being produced by roland. Please advise me. I feel as though I am dissapointed in my machine and the brand. Its really tough especially as my business is small and I’m trying to grow it with roland abd rite media products but this machine that was supposed to help me push out more work is now no better than a dust collector. I just wish the prints were brighter more vibrant, solid and not grainy. Please respond…I really feel desparate, dejected and foolish for buying this machine

    1. Hello Dale,
We would need more information in order to diagnose your problem and suggest a solution. I would suggest that you call your local dealer or our Technical Support department at 800-542-2307 (this number works only from within the United States) or 949-727-2100.

  29. I have a Roland SP-540v when printing small text I get “wind streaks” in the letters.

Ive tried various settings and presets but nothing seems to work. resolution, speed, heat, uni-bi direction, etc.

    cleaned and maintain regualry

    any suggestions?

    1. Hello Richard,
Based on the description of “wind streaks” and the troubleshooting history you’ve provided, we suspect the problem is an electro-static issue. We’ve posted a guide that discusses ways to suppress static on wide format printers, including Roland’s brand. You can access that guide here: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Static%20Suppression%20for%20Roland%20Printers.pdf. 30. Good evening,

I have a XC540 that i bought in March 2012. my problem comes and goes. Its not printing a solid colour the best way i can describe is that its wish washy. A Roland engineer came out to look at it and after all his tests he claimed it was down to a rogue substrate. however the problem has come back, surely its not a media fault again. could it be anything on the printer? i know the wipers are in need of changing, would thishelp?

FYI THe heads get cleaned weekly.

    kind regards, Carl.

    1. Hi Carl,
Based on the description provided, it’s possible there’s some interference with the head firing function. Considering you indicated that new wipers are needed, we recommended you replace them. 31. Hello! We have a Roland SJ-740 and it has always been a sturdy work-horse for us. Lately, however, I’ve been having some issues with it.

The most frustrating one at the moment is with the bi-directional settings. When I print small type that is built from multiple colors, the lateral registration is off just enough to annoy me. When I perform a bi-directional test print, the swatches are all pretty much spot-on. However, when I perform a head test print, I see something interesting: On the cyan swatch, the first second pass portion of the swatch prints just a smidge to the left of the first pass portion. All other heads print perfectly aligned on both passes.

Is there any way to correct this? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jeremy,
Based on your description of the problem, it’s likely that the printer’s bi-directional alignment is out of calibration. Please perform the procedure to re-align the nozzles (the process is documented in the printer’s user manual, starting in section 3-6 ‘Making Corrections for Printing’). If you don’t have the manual, you can view it online here: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/SJ-740_640_540_USE_EN_R5.pdf. If the problem continues, it’s recommended to contact an authorized Roland dealer to have the printer physically calibrated. You can access a list of regional dealers by using our locator service here: http://www.rolanddga.com/dealers/.

      Thanks,
      Dede

  32. Sometimes when I save my files as eps files and send it to the roland vs540 it puts white lines on the outside edges of my art work and sometimes the art is perfect. What can I do to fix this problem I have tried flattening the art and that doesn’t work. Please help!

  33. Problem with my 540v versacamm.

I was printing a 30″ x 30″ sign on my printer. the design was right but when we printed it on the media the sign was smaller compared to the design about 1/4 – 1/8″ difference. What seems to be the problem.

    Thanks.

    jake

    1. Hi Jake,
Based on the description, the issue is likely the result of the printer being out of calibration. Perform the bi-directional and feed alignments on the printer to restore normal operation. Instructions for both adjustments are found in the printer user manual. If you continue to experience issues, please contact Roland Technical Support to discuss this further. Call 800-542-2307 or email us by completing our online form here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/

  34. Hi Dede – quick question — am doing printing w/crop marks – then laminating with a high end heated stretchy 3m laminate – when I try to cut with the cutter the alignment is off as the laminate shrinks the print a bit – have tried using calibration feed setting % ie distance correction – but it seems to have no effect on the cut position – can you tell me why ? (I auto align with the 4 marks and the cut still ends up a bit off) Am using a vs540

    Thanks- Matt

  35. Two things happening recently with my VP-300. 1.) Printer is stopping too often to clean. I have always used Roland inks. Usually cleans after it print eh marks after every job and when I turn it on. Temp is around 60 all the time. Humidity is where it should be. Seems to have started on this big 7′ long big graphic. Replacing chips does not work either. i just did firmware update. 2.) Every time I turn it on and now after every clean it tells me to change my wipers – even if I JUST cleaned them. ? Help!!??

    1. Hi Andy,

If your printer is cleaning too frequently, it may be due to an error that’s causing the printer to believe that it’s not using Roland inks. This could be due to a bad chip on your cartridge, bad chip reader on the printer or other electrical issues with the printer.

It is advised that you contact your local dealer and schedule a service call. If you are not working with a dealer currently, you can locate one by using our Dealer Locator tool at http://www.rolanddga.com/dealers.

However, if the issue is that the printer cleans every time you turn it on, this is normal behavior and should not require a service call.

To address the change wiper message, please refer to page 58 of the User’s Manual, which can also be accessed on our website by following this link: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/VP-540_300_USE_EN_R4.pdf

      Thank you,
      Amber

  36. I have a Roland SP-540v

Was printing fine then started dripping cyan ink. i did the usual clean and then the cyan stopped printing all together. i docked the heads and then tried to draw some ink through the heads with a syringe but there was no compression

    Any ideas?

    1. Hi Mark,

For a guide that covers nozzle cleaning and restoration, please follow this link: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_PrintCut.pdf.

If that does not help you to restore the nozzles, we strongly recommend that you call your regional Roland dealer to have the printer inspected and repaired. If you aren’t working with a dealer currently, you can find one by using our Dealer Locator tool at http://www.rolanddga.com/dealers.

      Thank you,
      Amber

  37. I have a Roland Sp 540v

bought it second hand and everything I print even the color charts are coming out spotty.. Not sure how to explain but all colors with the with the exception of black has very tiny dots kind of like half tones?

Printer nozzle check looks good magenta has a couple missing bars. Black shows a little overspray very tiny.

Is this suppose to print like this or is there something wrong? Please Help!

    1. Hi Mike,

Based on the description, it sounds like the issue may be related to poor nozzle firing. We recommend that you follow the steps outlined in our test print guide, which is available for viewing online here: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_PrintCut.pdf.

Additionally, be sure to increase the heat applied to the material. Start at 40 degrees Celsius and increase as needed.

If you have additional questions, please contact our technical support team to discuss this issue further. Call 800-542-2307 or email us by completing our online form here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/.

  38. SP-540V

Ive discovered an issue with scale recently

if my image is exactly 6ft in length.

final print actually measures 1/2″ over

and scaling is set at 100%

Is this normal/whats the accuracy in printing scales of something this size??

    1. Hi Richard,

This sounds like a distance alignment issue and can likely be corrected by performing a “Feed” calibration on the printer. We’ve published a guide that illustrates this procedure, which can be accessed here: http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_FeedCal_Rev_1.pdf.

If the problem persists, please contact Roland Technical Support to discuss further. Call 800-542-2307 or email us by completing our online form here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/.

      Thank you,

  39. I have a SP300i when we load a 760mm roll of material and set the all the guides correctly it automatically detects the media width as only 710mm is this normal as i can find no information on this

    1. Hi John,

With any media, you’ll lose 1” – 2” of usable material because of the pinch roller width and position. To maximize the media usage, please ensure that the pinch rollers are positioned correctly. The printer user manual illustrates the optimal settings for pinch rollers. Please refer to that documentation for full details.

If you continue to experience issues, please contact Roland Technical Support to discuss this further. You can call 800-542-2307 or email us by completing our online form located here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/.

      Thank you,

  40. I am using a SC-540 and I am having issues with the alignment when cutting. Like it looks weighted on a side after printing and then cutting. But the Cutpath is just an offset path around the image. Is there a way that I can align the cutter to follow the path more evenly?

    1. Hi Christopher,

This is most commonly a calibration issue. We’ve published a document on print-cut adjustment that can be accessed here:

      http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_PrintCut.pdf

You can also find instructions on how to calibrate print-cut alignment by making adjustments from the menu on the printer in your user manual:

  41. I’m having issues printing photographic images on white static cling material on a Roland SC-540 with Roland ColoRip software. The ink is forming an orange peel effect across the image. I’ve tried every profile for every substrate with no luck. Any ideas?

    1. Hi Glenn,

It sounds like this may need to be custom profiled. We don’t produce profiles for ColoRIP, only for Roland VersaWorks, but you can purchase a profiling package from our online store here: http://www.rolanddgastore.com/product.aspx?zpid=1845.

If you continue to experience issues, please contact Roland Technical Support to discuss the details further. You can call 800-542-2307 or email us by completing our online form located here: http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/email/.

  42. We have had our VS 640 for 2.5 years now. Have printed tons of decals and wraps with it without fail. All of a sudden we are getting way too much saturation of ink ( and it appears to be either the Magenta or Lm). Decals( that are mostly light purple) that we just printed 850 of 2 days ago are now printing a dark purple. And we are using the exact same file and profile. Have even backed ink limit down to -5 and still looks about the same. Test print looks perfect, although looks darker ( more saturated) than I remember it being previously. Quality settings are at Pre Press US. Basically, we changed nothing from 2 days ago until now, but all files are printing differently than they did 2 days ago. Have actually uninstalled VW and reinstalled 4.0 to try that, and still printed same way. And.. to make matters worse.. we then updated it back to 4.8.2 and now the cutline from that same decal file does not show up at all ( not even the symbol in the special items area). There must be some setting that is unchecked or something that is not picking up cutcontour.. Very frustrated. We have done things the same exact way for 2.5 years with this machine and now all of a sudden… no good… And we use only OEM inks that we have bought only from our dealer. I am actually questioning an issue with one of the magenta or Lm cartridges.. as we did swap those out ironically when this problem began…. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as we are in a “no printing” status until it is resolved.

  43. Hi

We are having problems with our Roland SC-545EX, each time we try to print gray ranging from 90% gray to 5% gray, each time it seems that the magenta oversprays. So the gray becomes more of a pinkish colour.

    Thanks

    Elvin

    1. Hi Elvin,

Based on your description, this is likely the result of a profiling issue. Please visit our Roland Academy webinar archive to view a presentation titled “Printing Grey” that may provide some assistance on this topic: http://www.rolanddga.com/webinars.

  44. Hi,

I own a SP300-V and i set up the print cut a few weeks back and it was printing and then cutting perfectly but now it is out by about 2mm, i have done all tests on it and tried altering it but it still stays the same and doesn’t seem to adjust as i change the settings such as the feed and scan. What could i do to get this back to how it used to do?

    Much appreciated

    1. Hi Shaun,

This sounds like it could be a calibration issue. We have created a guide that covers print-cut adjustment that can be accessed here:
      http://support.rolanddga.com/docs/Documents/departments/Technical%20Services/Manuals%20and%20Guides/Service_Doc_PrintCut.pdf

  45. Hi !

    I have a roland sj745 ex.

The machine works fine but yesterday there was a problem while printing . Consider you are printing ONLY black border on a white vinyl . So the print should be total blank with only the black borders.

The problem is the machine unnecessarily prints cyan colour throughtout the print ( even outside the print area!) whereas the % of cyan colour is only 5 to 10% . And the test print works ok ..

Please reply about the problem! Thankyou!

    1. Hi Ashish,

In order to provide you with the best answer, we would need to get some more details on the issue. 46. Hi,

I’m trying to access the haltone definitions, on the VS 640, but I don’t have any material that allows me to do that. How can I accesse the haltone defitions so I can change de lpi in order to produce diferent results on printing?

    best regards

    Sérgio

    1. Hi Sérgio,

Halftone definitions can only be accessed within media profiles in which they are enabled. Unfortunately if that is not the case, you will not be able to access halftones using that profile. In order to gain access to halftones, you can either try to find a profile that offers halftones or create your own custom profile.

Everything has small dots in it.

I noticed someone named Mike had e-mailed you about a very similar issue on January 9th. You sent a message back saying the issue may be related to poor nozzle firing. You gave him a link to a guide that covers nozzle cleaning and restoration. but the link went to print cut adjustment.

By doing a print cut adjustment does that correct poor nozzle firing or is there another link to fix the nozzle issue. Thank You!

  49. Hello,

we have 3 Roland RE-640 presses. We have had a couple techs out to install and trouble shoot. We keep having what appears to be dot deflection and nozzle drop out. Press will be runing then next thing we have trails on the end of our image. We are dye subbing after printing which is magnifying the issue. any thoughts other than static or air in our lines that may be casing these issues?

I have a Roland HiFi52 and use BK CY MG OR GR YE pigmented inks. What I want to do is print a sign, 36″ or 48″ x 48″ on static cling media with solid black and gold colors, to be put, removable & reusable, on the inside of a vacant building’s window (no back lighting). What media should I be asking for form my suppliers? Any tips on printing?

  55. Am experiencing a problem with my Roland XJ 740 Printer. Its with the print quality. There are horizontal light stripes appearing and it keeps on losing the colour. I tried to adjust the calibration but the problem has persisted. Previously we were using -0.3% but even after adjusting to -0.6 or -0.8% still there is no difference. 58. Hi, I am planning to buy Roland Print and cut machine for large size prints on Cotton Tshirts. My concern is how to have a softer feel in print. The print cut gives the paper feel and in India, these days people like Tshirts with softer feel prints.Would appreciate a prompt response.

  59. Hi – My vs-540 cleans itself every 12 hrs or so when the machine is off. I have tried in the settings to eliminate this cleaning but am unable do so. Is there a way to disable this seeming automated function ??

    1. Hi Matt,

When the printer has been idle for a while, it goes into a soft shut down. Every now and then, the printer exercises the printhead and jets a few drops of ink (cleaning the machine). This keeps the printheads functional after periods of non use, without wasting a lot of ink.

If you have any more questions and concerns about this matter, we recommend that you contact our support team or a local dealer.

  60. Hi, I have a Roland VS-540 CMYK.

When I print the color red on Avery MPI 3000PP vinyl the red is grainy.

I have requested the media profile from Avery, but have had no luck.

I have tried using the MPI 3000 profile and the generic profiles within versaworks.

    Do you have any suggestions?

  63. Hi,

I have a roland sp540v 54inch large format printer. I recently purchased it secondhand and it is about 8 years old. I am using window 8 on my HP computer that runs the printing.

It has been printing fine with no problems, (except the occasional heat marks),

but last night the internet wasn’t working on my computer and a ‘HP diognostic check’ came up to solve the problem. It then said that it had ‘reset the ethernet adapter’ (while I was printing),

this then caused the print to stop half way though and wouldn’t start up again….

Now when I press print on Versaworks the file goes up into the printing status queue, the computer does it’s thinking for a while, then it removes itself from the queue.

There is no warning on the computer or printer screens, it just isn’t printing. It’s like the computer isn’t talking to my printer now.

Can you give me any ideas on what to check out to solve this please?

(The ip,subnet mask and default gateway numbers are still correct).

    Thanks.

I turned off the printer (at the switch on the side as well as the front, turned off my computer, then turned my computer back on. 69. I have owned and operated my SC 540 since 2004 – wonder of a machine – really! In all those years I have seen much, fixed very little, but I have never seen the message “replace wipers” (which I do fairly regularly). So I did. Now how do yo tell the machine I have done the deed? The message appears every time I wake the machine. If it is a secrete code, I promise I won’t tell, anyone- who doesn’t read your “blog.”

    Thanks,

  75. We are new to Roland and wide format printing. We have recently purchased a new 540i and are very pleased with it. We use it mostly for printing tiny (.25 x .50 inch) labels on vinyl. Recently we tried printing on 12 mil (.40mm) PVC stock (54 inch roll) and have run into difficulties getting it to lay perfectly flat. We use the media guides and all the friction rollers, 100% vacuum. It looks flat to the eye, but when printing with the head in the lower position, it prints clearly but the head apparently contacts the media in areas leaving black marks. If we run the head in the high position, it eliminates the scuffs but areas of the print appear blurred…presumably the high areas where it isn’t flat. Do you have any tips or suggestions for printing this stock? Thanks in advance.

  80. Hi,

We love our Roland Versacamm 540v. We purchased it second-hand and it’s been a real workhorse these past few years. Can you help me with this new printing issue? It prints perfectly, except several inches into a print job it starts printing grainy for about an inch all the way across, and then goes right back to perfect printing again for the rest of the job. What could be causing this? I use the printer several times a week on the same media and haven’t changed settings. The test prints are perfect. I’d greatly appreciate any help you can give!

  81. We have an SC-540 and the feed calibration is un-even from one side to the other. When printing at the full media width, one side(left) will have banding while the capping side(right) will print great. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  83. Hello, ihave sp540v and i have a printing problem. In all kinds of printing in all materials the printer starting good, after 10cm the color fade away (becoming white)then become the right color again, after 10 cm becomes slowly white and then back again and etc. I watch the machine like my eyes from the moment i bought that. The support here tells me to change the heads but i’m sure that it is not the solution because if it was problem of the heads it would be the same in all the printing and not like mine printing. I must also tell you that roland here told me to buy acro colors and that its the same thing like roland colors. I’m not sure about that because the problems started after i used that colors. if you want i can sent you a photo of the printing in your e-mail so you can understand better. I must say also that the problem is more in raster colors (50% of each color). Please help me.
